eXtyles support ends: a modern alternative for Word-to-XML

As of August 13, 2026, eXtyles no longer receives updates or technical support. For many scholarly and STM publishers, that raises the question of how to handle their existing Word-to-JATS, Word-to-BITS, or other XML workflows going forward. Our Word Transformation Agent offers a modern alternative.

eXtyles has established itself over more than twenty years as a tool for preparing and structuring Word manuscripts. Especially in scholarly and STM publishing, it's often a fixed part of the production pipeline from Word through XML to downstream publishing systems.

As of August 13, 2026, Inera no longer provides software updates or technical support for eXtyles. Existing perpetual licenses can still be used, but Inera itself notes that customers should not assume they can keep running their existing workflows reliably in the long term.

For publishers currently running eXtyles in production, the search for an alternative is becoming increasingly concrete.

Word Transformation Agent as an alternative to eXtyles

With our Word Transformation Agent, we at mintloop have built an AI agent that takes on exactly this task. It analyzes Word documents, identifies their content and semantic structures, and automatically converts them into formats such as JATS, BITS, or other XML structures.

We don't want to simply replace eXtyles with the next desktop tool. The agent can be embedded into existing work environments and publishing processes, working alongside other systems and process steps there.

For editorial and production teams, Word can remain the familiar working environment, while the agent takes care of structuring, validation, and transformation.

Turning a necessary switch into a better process

The end of eXtyles support is an opportunity to rethink a process that has grown over many years. Rather than replacing the old desktop tool with another one as closely as possible, the Word-to-XML pipeline can be rebuilt as an automated process and integrated directly into the existing system landscape.

That's exactly why we built the Word Transformation Agent. Existing publisher rules and requirements can be taken into account, and the resulting structured content can then be handed directly to editorial, content, or publishing systems.

If you're currently using eXtyles and thinking about a replacement, we're happy to take a look at your existing workflow together and show you how our Word Transformation Agent can take it over.
